Candid vs. Documentary Style Photos and How To Get Them on your Wedding Day

When it comes to wedding photography, many couples tell me, “I want a lot of candid photos, not posed ones.” But what do they really mean? Often, when I ask for examples of photos they love, the images that they consider “candid” are actually prompted. Think of bridesmaids giggling as the bride twirls during their first look, or the groom leading the bride through a field at sunset. These photos are beautiful, but they aren’t purely organic moments.

So, what’s the difference between candid and documentary wedding photography? Let’s break it down!

Candid Vs Documentary Photography

Candid Photos:

Candid photos are often prompted to create a moment that looks authentic. These might involve slight direction to evoke a natural reaction, such as a bride spinning in her dress while her bridesmaids laugh.

Documentary Photos

In contrast, a documentary approach is about capturing events as they happen, without interference. This style is similar to photojournalism, where the photographer is basically a fly on the wall. We record the day’s events honestly and authentically. Think of capturing the bridesmaids feeding each other fruit in the PJ’s while doing makeup, or the groom’s whispered words to the bride when they steal a private moment together.

Why the line is blurred

In the wedding world, the line between candid and editorial can often be blurred. A skilled wedding photographer should be able to create both styles, seamlessly blending candid moments with posed shots that still feel genuine. Many bridal campaigns focus on editorial photos shot to feel documentary, adding human elements, unexpected twists and humor to tell a full story in a single frame.

Tips for achieving a documentary style gallery

If true candid moments are what you’re looking for, here are some tips to help you achieve an authentic documentary-style wedding gallery:

  • Truly Enjoy Your Day: Brides often focus so much on getting the perfect photo that they miss out on the moment. Relax and enjoy each part of your day!

  • Embrace the Unexpected: Something will inevitably go wrong. Embrace it!! These unexpected moments often make for the best stories and photos.

  • Spend Time with your Favorite People: Interact with people you love most. Dance, laugh, sneak in a kiss before the ceremony. Do what feels right for you!

  • Kiss Your Spouse: Don’t wait for your photographer’s cue. If you want to kiss, kiss! Capture those genuine emotions

  • Slow Down: Instead of cramming your timeline with every idea from Pinterest, focus on what you truly care about. Slow down and savor all of these moments.

  • Don’t Worry About the Camera: Some people instinctively pose when they see a camera. Try to forget it’s there. Focus on your experience, not the lens.

why you need both styles

While documentary-style photography is about capturing those genuine moments, your wedding day does require some direction and posed photos. It’s a beautiful balance of being an observer and a director. That’s why understanding my clients’ expectations and setting realistic goals is super important to me. I love getting those stunning editorial portraits that still feel true to who you are, while also capturing the little in-between moments that make your wedding day uniquely yours.
